The Paleo diet is often referred to as the ‘Caveman diet‘ because of how simplistic it is and how it is based around what we used to eat hundreds of years ago. It is gaining more popularity all the time, as people are getting great benefits out of it both in weight loss and also general health.
But What Exactly Is It?
As we have just touched on, the diet itself is based around what typical cavemen would eat back in the day. This means no refined sugar or processed foods that are packed with preservatives, stabilisers and other additives.
The cavemen would eat a typical diet of fish, nuts, meats and greens whilst consuming lots of water.
Why Is The Diet So Beneficial?
Well, it removes a lot of toxins from the body. Because it is mainly natural and fresh foods, it reduces the amount of chemicals we consume which cause toxins in the body. These toxins mean we don’t use all of the foods we consume properly and they get stored in the body. That’s why people who have an acidic body won’t lose weight as easy as people who are alkaline (You can buy strips from your local pharmacy to test this).
The popularity in the last 5 years, as we can see on this chart, has dramatically increased:
Types Of Foods You Can Eat On The Paleo Diet
Meats – General red meats can be consumed, as well as chicken.
Fish – Fish is very important on this diet and tuna, cod, sardines and salmon are favourites.
Nuts – Nuts are packed with beneficial nutrients too, so cashews, walnuts, almonds and peanuts can be snacked on daily.
Leafy greens – Vegetables help to control blood sugars and are packed with lots of goodness. Kale, spinach and lettuce can be eaten liberally each day.
Foods You Should Avoid
The list of foods to avoid on this diet are endless but you should certainly avoid dairy products, processed foods, potatoes, cereals, salt and processed sugars. Try and stick to foods that either grow in the ground or on trees and make sure they are organic which means they haven’t been modified or sprayed with nasty pesticides.
To get the best out of the diet, it is important to try and eat the same amount of calories each day. Then you can measure your weight regularly and know if you need to add more calories or take some out. If you lose weight too fast, then increase your intake slightly. If you put on weight then you can remove some calories and you should see a difference.
These are the countries where the diet is most popular, with New Zealand having the most interest:
So that’s the Paleo diet explained. Unlike other diets, people choose this one as a lifestyle choice and stay on it permanently. Because not consuming processed foods, sugars, salts, cereals and other foods causes no end of damage to our bodies.
So the moral of the story; keep things natural folks!
